Craig Breslow didn't wait for the market to come to him. The Red Sox chief baseball officer pulled the trigger more than a week before the deadline, sending rookie lefty Connelly Early to Washington in exchange for Curtis Mead — a move Breslow himself called incredibly uncomfortable, and one that's already drawing serious attention around baseball.
Mead is exactly why it makes sense. The breakout infielder has been one of the more quietly dangerous bats in the game this season, a right-handed slugger with real power upside. Boston gave up a young arm with a future, but Breslow is betting the present is worth it, and early returns suggest he might be right.
Meanwhile in San Francisco, Kyle Shanahan made his presence felt at the first training camp practice Sunday — standing alongside general manager John Lynch for roughly thirty minutes, less than two weeks after a car crash left him with a concussion and other injuries. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster has described running things as really a group effort, but seeing Shanahan on that field clearly meant something to a Niners organization with championship expectations riding on this season.
