Welcome to Markets Desk, your midday read on what's moving and why.
Equities closed sharply higher on Tuesday, with the S&P five hundred gaining nearly one point eight percent, the Dow adding one point seven, and the Nasdaq one hundred surging three point three percent. Strong earnings across several names combined with diplomatic movement toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz gave traders reason to buy broadly, pushing risk appetite firmly back into the market.
Upstart was a standout in the session, with shares climbing after the AI lending company reported that upgrades to its risk assessment model are translating into real loan volume growth. The company says its enhanced algorithm is doing a better job pricing borrower risk, and the market is treating that as a meaningful inflection point for a business that had struggled through a tighter credit cycle.
Not every earnings report landed well, though. Mosaic swung to a net loss in the second quarter as higher raw material costs and weaker sales volumes overwhelmed what were actually stronger phosphate and potash prices. It's a reminder that input cost pressure can erode commodity pricing tailwinds faster than investors expect, and Mosaic's results reflect that squeeze in real time.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
