San Francisco is dealing with a significant blow heading into the season. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is going under the knife for a PCL injury that's been lingering since last year, and GM John Lynch confirmed Saturday the surgery is season-ending. The forty-niners now lean hard on their veteran receiver room and a second-round rookie to fill that void.
Over in Buffalo, the injury news kept coming out of training camp. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field Saturday after suffering a lower-body injury during practice. No word yet on severity, but losing Gardner-Johnson even temporarily would be a real hit to a Bills defense that has championship expectations riding on every healthy body it can keep on the field.
And out in Houston, the front office drama is worth watching. Reports indicate Astros owner Jim Crane personally shut down a trade with the Minnesota Twins that by most accounts looked like a smart move for the ballclub. When ownership starts overriding baseball operations decisions, it raises real questions about the direction of a franchise still trying to contend in a loaded American League West.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
