Welcome to The Light.
There is a particular kind of disillusionment that comes not from catastrophe, but from the slow erosion of what we feared and what we hoped. Observers of American democracy have noted something quietly unsettling: the authoritarian moments many predicted have not arrived in their most dramatic forms, and yet something has still shifted, subtly, in the grain of public life.
From that question of institutional faith, we turn to one man navigating his own. Pope Leo the Fourteenth, just weeks removed from cancer surgery and the loss of part of a lung, has embarked on an eleven-day journey through South America, from the Southern Cone to the Amazon. It is an act of presence as much as pilgrimage, and the Catholic world watches closely.
And then there is the cosmos itself, which has become something of a laboratory for physics grand ambitions. A writer for Aeon asks whether, in our hunger for elegant theory and the biggest of questions, we have quietly abandoned our wonder at the universe's beautiful disorder, its refusal to be tidy, its insistence on remaining strange.
Three stories, one hour, one world asking itself what it believes. That is this hour's reflection. Carry the light gently.
