Welcome to Sports Desk, let's get into it.
The NBA and FIBA are pushing full steam ahead with their NBA Europe expansion plans, and they're making clear that EuroLeague's rejection isn't slowing anyone down. Team owners in Europe shut the door on a merger offer this week, but both governing bodies say the project moves forward with or without them, and that's a significant power play with real long-term consequences for basketball on that continent.
Shifting to the hardwood stateside, the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers square off in preseason action, both sitting at one and zero. Brooklyn is carrying a chip on their shoulder after being written off as a bottom-dweller again this season, and while it's only preseason, the Nets are clearly building something in practice that they want the rest of the league to notice sooner rather than later.
And in the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries pulled off a dramatic playoff win, and now the Las Vegas Aces, one of the most dominant franchises in recent league history, are staring down a stunning elimination. Las Vegas mounted a furious comeback but couldn't close it out, and the pressure on that locker room right now is absolutely immense.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
