Welcome to The Light, where we pause together in the quiet between the noise.
A new report from the Institute for Family Studies suggests that couples who share a regular practice of faith — attending services, praying together, holding marriage as a lifelong covenant — report deeper intimacy and greater satisfaction in their relationships than their secular counterparts. There is something worth sitting with there, about the way shared meaning shapes the body as much as the soul.
That question of meaning flows naturally toward something Pope Leo the Fourteenth offered this week for the one hundredth World Mission Sunday. In a message to the faithful, he reflected on evangelisation not as doctrine delivered, but as love enacted — recalling how the prayers of ordinary people sustained his own missionary work across years spent in Peru. A century of Sundays, and still the message is simply: go gently, and go with love.
And then there is the quieter story — a short film from Aeon — about an elderly couple facing an unbearable question in the wake of tragedy: whether to let their son go so that others might live. It asks nothing less than what love costs when it is most fully itself, and it leaves the answer, wisely, unresolved.
That's this hour's reflection. Carry the light gently.
