Meta is facing scrutiny over plans to lay off more than seven hundred contract workers in Ireland who have been training its artificial intelligence systems. The workers, employed through a third-party contractor, describe the situation as undignified — people doing the foundational human labor behind AI, now at risk of being discarded once that work is done.
Shifting to a serious cybersecurity warning, organizations hit by the recent Trivy and LiteLLM supply-chain attacks who paid ransoms to the group known as Vect likely got nothing back. Researchers at Check Point found the malware wipes data entirely, and full recovery is simply not possible — not for the victim, and not even for the attacker who took the money.
And on a very different front, Google has signed a new contract giving the Pentagon expanded access to its artificial intelligence tools. This comes after Anthropic declined a similar arrangement, citing concerns about domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Google's decision raises fresh questions about where the major AI labs draw their ethical lines — and whether those lines move when the contracts get large enough.
