**1 Kings 18:28** โ€” *"So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them."*

The prophets of Baal bled for a god who never answered.

This is the cost of misplaced devotion โ€” not merely wasted effort, but genuine suffering poured into silence. They escalated. They wounded themselves. They gave more, expecting their intensity to compel a response that never came.

Consider the contrast Elijah presents just verses later: a simple prayer, a God who answers with fire.

Striving harder in the wrong direction is not faithfulness โ€” it is exhaustion dressed as worship. The covenant God of Israel requires no self-inflicted wounds to secure His attention. He already knows your name.

Scripture reminds us that He who did not spare His own Son will graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32). The altar that truly answers does not demand your blood โ€” it has already received His.

Walk with that mercy today.
