**Hebrews 9:9** — *"It is an illustration for the present time, because the gifts and sacrifices being offered were unable to cleanse the conscience of the worshiper."*
The priest's hands never stopped moving — animals, grain, incense, blood. Year after year. And yet the worshiper walked away still carrying the weight.
That is the precise point the writer of Hebrews wants us to feel. The old covenant's sacrifices were *illustrations*, not solutions. They pointed forward. They could not reach the conscience — that deep interior place where guilt actually lives.
Only Christ enters there. Not with the blood of bulls, but with His own. The cross does what the altar never could: it cleanses from the inside out, restoring the worshiper to God without residue, without remainder.
By grace, we do not merely perform rituals and hope they hold. We abide in a finished work.
Let us reflect on what it means to walk with a truly clean conscience — not earned, but received.
