**Exodus 21:12** โ€” *"Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death."*

The bluntness of this covenant law stops us cold. No softening. No exceptions listed here.

Yet this is the same God who later provided cities of refuge โ€” places where the one who killed *unintentionally* could flee and be heard (Numbers 35:11โ€“12). The law did not contradict mercy; it created the precise space where mercy could be distinguished from injustice.

God's holiness demands that human life carry weight. Made in His image (Genesis 1:27), every person bears a dignity that cannot be casually discarded. The severity of Exodus 21:12 is not cruelty โ€” it is the covenant declaration that *you matter, and so does your neighbor*.

Walk with that truth today: the same God who guards life with such gravity is the One who gave His own Son to redeem it.

Let us reflect on what it means to live as image-bearers under so watchful a Shepherd.
