**1 Chronicles 19:7** โ *"So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba while the Ammonites were mustered from their cities and marched out for battle."*
Thirty-two thousand chariots. The Ammonites had insulted David's envoys and then spent enormous treasure assembling a coalition to defend that insult โ because pride, once acted upon, demands escalation.
Scripture reminds us that what begins as a small dishonor can grow into a catastrophic mobilization of resources, relationships, and reputation โ all in service of protecting the wound rather than seeking peace.
Proverbs 17:14 counsels wisely: *"Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out."*
The Ammonites could not uncamp what fear and pride had assembled. But by grace, we are not bound to that same path.
Consider the cost before the chariots are hired.
