**Luke 3:7** โ *"You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?"*
John did not open with comfort. He opened with diagnosis.
The crowds came to the Jordan dressed in religious intention โ yet John's first word was confrontation. Not cruelty. Covenant faithfulness. A shepherd who only soothes the sheep while wolves circle is no shepherd at all.
This is the mercy we often miss in hard words: they are spoken *before* judgment arrives, not after. John's severity was itself a grace โ a warning given while the road to repentance was still open.
Scripture reminds us that true love tells the truth at cost to itself. Soft words that leave us comfortable in our wandering are far more dangerous than hard words that call us home.
Consider the last time a difficult truth redirected your walk โ and whether you received it as wound or as gift.
