**Deuteronomy 28:59** โ *"He will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary disasters, severe and lasting plagues, and terrible and chronic sicknesses."*
This is covenant language โ not cruelty. Moses stood before a people about to inherit the land, and he spoke plainly: sustained disobedience carries sustained consequence. The Hebrew word *pelฤ'* behind "extraordinary" means *wonder* โ the same word used for God's miraculous works. Here, that wonder is inverted. What God designed to mark His faithfulness could, under broken covenant, mark His discipline.
Chronic suffering in Scripture is never without meaning. It calls us to examine the covenant we walk in โ not with guilt, but with honest stewardship of the relationship God has offered.
The same God who warned here also promised in verse 1 that obedience leads to being *set high above all nations.*
Discipline and mercy share the same Author. Let us reflect on which side of the covenant we are stewarding today.
