**Ezra 5:12** โ€” *"But since our fathers angered the God of heaven, He delivered them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean who destroyed this temple and carried away the people to Babylon."*

The exiles speaking here are not making excuses โ€” they are making a confession. Before asking Darius to restore their building rights, they first name the covenant breach that caused the exile. Accountability precedes restoration.

This is the posture of a faithful steward: not rewriting history to protect reputation, but tracing consequences honestly back to their root. The returning community could not rebuild on a foundation of denial. Neither can we.

Scripture reminds us that God's discipline is never arbitrary โ€” it is covenantal. He acts in response to how His people walk with Him.

Let the honesty of these returned exiles be a mirror. True restoration begins not with a plan, but with an acknowledgment.
