**Proverbs 13:1** β *"A wise son heeds his father's discipline, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke."*
The Hebrew word for *heeds* here is **Χ©ΦΈΧΧΦ·Χ’** (*shama*) β the same word used in the Shema of Deuteronomy 6:4. It carries weight beyond mere hearing. It means to receive, to obey, to let the word *land*.
Discipline from a father is covenant love in action. It is not punishment for its own sake β it is formation. Hebrews 12:11 echoes this: *"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness."*
The mocker does not simply disagree. He has closed himself off β not from a voice, but from wisdom itself.
Walk with a posture of *shama* today β ears open, pride set aside, the soul ready to receive what grace has sent through those who love you enough to speak plainly.
Let us reflect on who in our lives we may have stopped truly hearing.
