**1 John 2:2** โ *"He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."*
John wrote this to a congregation tempted to shrink grace โ to fence it inside their community, their certainty, their clean theology. The word translated *atoning sacrifice* is *hilasmos* โ a propitiation, a covering that fully satisfies. Not a partial payment. Not a down payment.
The whole world.
This does not dissolve the call to repentance or covenant faithfulness. But it does shatter every impulse to position ourselves as gatekeepers of who God may redeem.
The Shepherd leaves the ninety-nine. The Father runs toward the road. The atoning work of Christ is wider than our instinct to protect it.
Walk with that today โ not as license, but as mercy extended further than we dare imagine.
Let us reflect on where we may have quietly narrowed what God has declared wide.
