**Matthew 23:38** — *"Look, your house is left to you desolate."*
Jesus spoke these words over Jerusalem — not with cold indifference, but with tears already forming (Luke 19:41). The Temple, the seat of covenant worship, had become a hollow shell. Religious activity continued. Sacrifices were offered. Yet the presence had departed.
This is the quiet tragedy of desolation: the structure remains, but the Shepherd has withdrawn.
Ezekiel witnessed something similar centuries earlier — the glory of God lifting slowly from the Temple, step by reluctant step (Ezekiel 10:18). God does not abandon without warning. He lingers. He yearns.
The haunting question for every heart that bears His name is not whether the building still stands — but whether the One who dwells within it still abides.
Consider the difference between a house that is occupied and one that is merely maintained.
