**Genesis 31:31** โ€” *"I was afraid," Jacob answered, "for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force."*

Jacob had fled in secret โ€” flocks, family, and all โ€” not from wickedness, but from fear. He did not trust that honesty with Laban would yield mercy. Fear, unchecked, had shaped his entire escape.

Consider the weight of that confession: *I was afraid.* Not proud strategy. Not bold faith. Fear.

Yet even here, God's covenant hand had been at work. The Lord had already spoken to Laban the night before, restraining him (Genesis 31:24). Jacob's fear was real โ€” and God's protection was realer still.

Fear often narrates a story before God has finished writing it. We flee, we conceal, we brace for the worst โ€” while Providence moves quietly ahead of us.

Scripture reminds us in Psalm 56:3 โ€” *"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."*

Let us reflect on where fear has outpaced our trust in the Shepherd who goes before.
