**1 Corinthians 5:9** โ€” *"I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people."*

Paul is referencing a *prior* letter โ€” one we no longer possess. Which means this congregation had already received correction on this matter and still needed a second word. Beloved, that is a pastoral reality worth sitting with.

The call here is not to build walls around the church against the world โ€” Paul clarifies that plainly in verse 10. The boundary is *internal*: protecting the covenant community from those who claim the name of Christ while walking in unrepentant sin.

Holiness is not hostility. It is *discernment with love* โ€” knowing that unaddressed sin, left to abide among the gathered, does not stay contained. Scripture reminds us: a little leaven works through the whole batch (1 Corinthians 5:6).

The shepherd guards the flock not out of fear, but out of faithfulness.

Let us reflect on whether we have confused tolerance with grace.
