**Hebrews 12:1** โ€” *"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us."*

The Greek word for "encumbrance" here is *แฝ„ฮณฮบฮฟฯ‚* โ€” literally a bulk or mass. The writer is not speaking of obvious sin alone, but of weight. Legitimate weight. Respectable weight. The kind that earns nods of approval from others yet quietly steals your stride.

Consider the elder who carries every committee decision alone. The mother who cannot release her grown child to God's care. The minister who cannot lay down his reputation long enough to repent.

The cloud of witnesses is not watching to judge. They are testifying โ€” by their own finished races โ€” that the weight *can* be thrown off.

By grace, what you carry today does not have to cross the finish line with you.
