**Luke 18:20** โ *"You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.'"*
Notice what Jesus does here. A ruler approaches with grand spiritual ambition โ *"What must I do to inherit eternal life?"* โ and Christ walks him back to the covenant bedrock. Not mysticism. Not achievement. The commandments the man has carried since boyhood.
There is pastoral wisdom in this. Before we soar toward lofty devotion, the Shepherd asks us to dwell in what we already know. The covenant was not given as a starting line to leave behind โ it remains the ground beneath every step of faithful living.
Ebed-melech knew one act of mercy. The rich ruler knew five commandments. Knowing is never the ceiling; it is the foundation.
Scripture reminds us that obedience to what God has already revealed is itself an act of worship worth examining before we seek what lies beyond it.
