There is a story making its way through theological circles this week — the observation that Jesus, by every modern metric of ministry success, preached himself into failure. Thousands followed him, until he spoke the hard thing, and most of them walked away. What lingers in that image is a question not just for pastors, but for anyone who has ever softened a truth to keep the room full.
And then there is a young woman's account of a mastectomy performed when she was fifteen — a procedure she now views as the product of fear, manipulation, and institutional pressure. She writes that no surgery could reach the loneliness at the center of her pain. Her story asks us to sit with the distance between urgent intervention and genuine healing, and who bears responsibility when those two things are confused for one another.
Closer to the ordinary and yet no less searching, a foster mother invites biological parents to examine something they have never had to question — the assumption that their children are permanently theirs. Impermanence, she suggests, is not the foster parent's burden alone. It is simply the human condition, waiting to be noticed.
