In Atlanta, the Braves handed the Dodgers their first loss in seven games, and it was Ozzie Albies who delivered the knockout blow. With two outs in the eighth inning, Albies singled home the go-ahead run to give Atlanta a four to three victory, snapping Los Angeles's six-game winning streak in a clash between two first-place clubs. Matt Olson set the table with a leadoff double, and the Braves made it stick.
Meanwhile in St. Louis, the Baltimore Orioles came in and absolutely dismantled the Cardinals, thirteen to one. Pete Alonso was the story, going four for four with a three-run homer and four RBIs before exiting in the fifth. Chris Bassitt was nearly untouchable over six and two-thirds innings, walking nobody and keeping the Cardinals completely off balance. Baltimore is rolling right now.
And shifting to the college football landscape, the SEC has officially joined the Big Ten in blocking former professional athletes from returning to college eligibility. The vote was unanimous, sixteen to zero among conference presidents. The rule puts Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson's amateur status directly in question, and could have sweeping implications for programs leaning on NFL veterans as rosters continue to evolve under the new era of college football.
