Good evening, you're tuned in to Markets Desk.
Visa and Mastercard both closed at record highs today, signaling that while American consumers are growing more selective in their spending habits, aggregate transaction volumes remain robust. The payment networks serve as a real-time gauge of consumer health, and right now that gauge is pointing firmly upward.
Elsewhere in equities, it was a tale of two markets. The Dow edged higher by roughly a quarter percent, closing above fifty-three thousand four hundred, as investors rotated into defensives. But Nvidia extended its recent slide, dragging the Nasdaq down nearly three quarters of a percent and pulling the S&P five hundred into negative territory, closing just under seventy-six hundred and fifty-four. The growth-to-value rotation is sharpening.
On the deal front, ExxonMobil is reportedly among four bidders circling Shell's underperforming U.S. chemicals assets, a package valued at roughly eight billion dollars. For Exxon, this would represent a significant downstream expansion at a moment when refining margins are compressing and the major is looking to diversify its earnings base beyond crude.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
