Equities closed mixed Wednesday as bond yields pulled back and chipmakers weighed on the Nasdaq. The S&P five hundred edged up fractionally, the Dow followed suit, but the Nasdaq one hundred slipped by about a fifth of a percent as semiconductor names gave back recent gains. Futures are pointing slightly higher heading into Thursday's session.
Speaking of chips, analysts are pushing back against the pessimism following this week's pullback in semiconductor stocks. Several on the Street are pointing to historical precedent, arguing that short-term pressure in the sector has consistently opened entry points for investors willing to hold through the noise. The underlying demand thesis, driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure spending, remains largely intact.
Meanwhile, a different kind of tech trade caught the market's attention. After President Trump hinted that federal regulation could be coming for Hyperliquid, the decentralized crypto exchange, traders moved aggressively into call options on related assets. Some of those positions raised eyebrows given their size and timing, suggesting at minimum that someone was positioned ahead of the commentary, and that crypto regulatory risk is very much back on the table.
