Welcome to Markets Desk, here's what's moving right now.
Equity markets are treading water this session, with the S&P five hundred barely in positive territory, up just a tenth of a percent, as traders hold out hope for a diplomatic agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The geopolitical premium has kept a lid on any decisive rally, but the mood is cautiously constructive rather than defensive.
Shifting to commodities, cocoa is taking a significant hit today, off five percent in New York futures and falling to one-week lows. The culprit is unusually favorable growing conditions across Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world's two dominant producers. When the weather cooperates in West Africa, the market reprices fast, and that's exactly what we're seeing. Meanwhile arabica coffee is moving in the opposite direction, climbing more than two percent to a five-week high after a major earthquake struck Colombia, raising real concerns about supply disruptions from one of the world's most important arabica-producing regions. Robusta is barely moved, which tells you the market views this as a Colombian story specifically rather than a broad soft-commodities shock.
On the corporate side, OpenAI is losing another senior executive, with longtime chief operating officer Brad Lightcap announcing his departure to pursue a new venture. This continues a notable pattern of leadership exits as the company navigates its pivot toward a public offering.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
