Welcome to Markets Desk, your midday read on what's moving and why.
Equities closed quietly in the red Monday, but the driver was anything but quiet. Crude oil surged, reigniting inflation concerns that sent a chill through rate-sensitive assets. The S&P five hundred slipped a fraction, the Dow shed about a tenth of a percent, and the Nasdaq one hundred led the modest decline, falling roughly a third of a percent as growth names bore the brunt of the pressure.
Shifting to commodities, arabica coffee futures fell nearly one percent on Monday as dry conditions in Brazil are actually working in the market's favor for once, allowing harvest activity to accelerate faster than expected. Robusta moved the other direction, closing modestly higher, leaving the coffee complex split heading into the week.
And in New York, a legal challenge has temporarily halted Mayor Zohran Mamdani's pied-à-terre tax, which would have targeted non-primary residences valued above five million dollars. A state judge issued the block following a lawsuit from homeowners, putting a significant piece of the mayor's revenue strategy on pause and raising real questions about its path forward.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
