The jobs report is the story of the day, and it is not a pretty one. Nonfarm payrolls fell by twenty-three thousand in July, a stark miss against consensus expectations of eighty to ninety thousand gains. Worse, May and June were revised down by a combined one hundred and three thousand, leaving the three-month average at just thirty-four thousand jobs. That is not a soft landing — that is an economy losing altitude, and bond markets are taking notice as rate cut bets sharpen considerably heading into the weekend.
Shifting to private markets, SpaceX had what looked like a dangerous moment Thursday morning. Seven million shares crossed at the open in a single block trade, cleared overnight at roughly one hundred and seven dollars a share — nearly three quarters of a billion dollars in one print. The fear was that kind of concentrated selling would crater the stock, but instead shares rallied six percent. The takeaway is that when a trade is fully telegraphed and absorbed cleanly, the market reads it as a sign of structural demand, not distress.
And in the agricultural complex, wheat is finishing the week on firmer footing. Kansas City hard red winter futures led the move, up thirteen to fifteen cents on the session. Chicago soft red winter contracts added seven to nine cents. The weekly picture is mixed, but Friday's strength suggests short covering ahead of the weekend amid ongoing global supply uncertainty.
