France punched through to the quarterfinals with a one-nothing win over Paraguay in Philadelphia, but it was anything but clean. Kylian Mbappé and Les Bleus had to navigate near-one-hundred-degree heat and a Paraguay side that leaned hard into the dark arts — provoking fouls, baiting confrontations, and testing France's composure at every turn. Mbappé scored, laughed it off, and France moved on.
Speaking of composure, Willson Contreras had very little of it recently — but he's trying to make it right. The Red Sox first baseman broke down in tears Saturday, offering an unprompted apology for his role in two separate bench-clearing incidents against the Yankees and Nationals. A seven-game suspension is looming, and Contreras clearly knows the damage goes beyond the field.
On a lighter note, the NBA Summer League gave us something to watch. Darryn Peterson dropped twenty-eight points in his debut, and Cameron Boozer added fifteen in his own first outing. Two young prospects stepping into the spotlight and making the most of their early auditions — the league is already paying attention.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
