SK Hynix made a historic move this week, filing to raise nearly thirty billion dollars through a Nasdaq listing scheduled for July tenth. Every dollar of that capital is earmarked for advanced AI memory fabrication plants and next-generation EUV chip-making equipment — a signal of just how aggressively the memory industry is betting on sustained AI demand.
That demand, though, is running into a very human problem. Saint-Gobain's CEO noted in passing this week that the AI data center buildout is now facing a skilled labor shortage. GPUs, power, water, and storage have all been bottlenecks before, but finding enough qualified workers to physically construct these facilities may prove the hardest constraint to engineer around.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm is spending close to four billion dollars to acquire Modular, one of the more closely watched chip software startups of the AI era. The deal gives Qualcomm a meaningful foothold in the software layer that sits between AI models and the silicon running them — increasingly the battlefield where chip companies compete as hardware alone stops being enough.
