We start with a somber note tonight. The San Francisco forty-niners are mourning the sudden death of former All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith, who passed away at just thirty-six years old. The team announced his death Saturday night without disclosing a cause. Smith was one of the most ferocious pass rushers of his generation before legal troubles derailed what should have been a Hall of Fame career. A tragic loss for the football world.
Shifting to the diamond, Yoshinobu Yamamoto came agonizingly close to history in Chicago. The Dodgers ace carried a no-hit bid all the way into the ninth inning before Tristan Peters led off with a home run for the White Sox. Yamamoto still dominated, finishing with a seven to one victory, but this is now the second time he has lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning. Heartbreaking and brilliant at the same time.
And in Detroit, Tarik Skubal returned from a month on the shelf and the rust showed. The Tigers ace lasted just four and two-thirds innings in a three to one loss to Cleveland, and he was the first to admit it. Quote, I need to be better, plain and simple. No excuses from the ace, just accountability.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
