Intel made a lot of noise at Computex this week, and perhaps the most striking announcement was Clearwater Forest — a new Xeon six-plus chip built on Intel's eighteen-A process node, packing up to two hundred eighty-eight cores and five hundred seventy-six megabytes of L-three cache. Intel claims it runs thirty percent faster per thread than AMD's top EPYC chip, which is a bold claim worth watching closely.
Looking further down the road, Intel also confirmed that Diamond Rapids, its next-generation Xeon seven platform, arrives in two thousand twenty-seven. Core counts climb fifty percent over the current generation and memory bandwidth doubles — but the trade-off is real: Hyperthreading, Intel's long-standing simultaneous multithreading feature, is being retired entirely, meaning thread counts actually fall by a quarter even as raw cores rise.
Rounding out Intel's Computex push is Crescent Island, the company's inference-focused data center GPU. The chip offers up to four hundred eighty gigabytes of LPDDR-five-X memory, a deliberately generous pool aimed at handling the enormous context windows that modern AI workloads demand. Whether that memory advantage translates to real competitive ground against Nvidia remains the open question.
