In Sudan, the weight of the world's largest humanitarian crisis continues to press down on thirty-three million souls. Families displaced, children hungry, water scarce — a war between armed forces that began in April of twenty twenty-three with no clear end in sight, asking us quietly what our collective responsibility looks like across borders we rarely cross.
Closer to home, a different kind of threshold was crossed in the American South, where the Reverend Sarah Fisher has been installed as an Episcopal bishop — the first woman in a same-sex relationship to hold that position in the region. It is a moment that will mean different things to different hearts, but it is undeniably a marker of how institutions carry, and sometimes transform, the communities that dwell within them.
And in several states, legislatures are now moving to increase penalties for disrupting worship services, following the storming of a Minnesota church earlier this year. It raises a question worth sitting with — how we hold both the right to protest and the right to gather in peace, without letting one extinguish the other.
