Apple is quietly having a breakout year, and Samsung handed them the opening. With the Galaxy S twenty-six delayed past its usual launch window, Apple captured first quarter gains in the US smartphone market, growing iPhone sales volume by one point three percent while the broader market fell five point seven percent. Counterpoint Research says the iPhone seventeen is on a genuine hot streak.
That Samsung story gets considerably more complicated when you zoom out. A forty-five thousand person labor strike at Samsung's memory chip plants is threatening supply chains that underpin the entire AI buildout. Samsung produces roughly a third of the world's DRAM, and together with SK Hynix controls nearly two-thirds of the global market for high-bandwidth memory, the chips AI systems cannot function without. Any prolonged disruption here ripples fast and wide.
Shifting to Amazon, and the picture inside that company is one of sustained pressure. Twelve current and former employees described to Business Insider a workplace reshaped by mass layoffs, a five-day return-to-office mandate, and an aggressive AI push all arriving simultaneously. The "Day One" culture was always built around relentless change, but employees say the pace right now is something different entirely.
