Welcome to Markets Desk, your midday read on what's moving markets and the broader economy.
Chipmakers are carrying equities higher this session, with the Nasdaq one hundred up nearly one percent and the S and P five hundred adding more than half a point. The Dow is the lone holdout, slipping fractionally, as the broader bid concentrates in technology and semiconductor names driving the index divergence.
Shifting to soft commodities, sugar prices are taking a notable hit today, with New York world sugar falling to a five-week low and London white sugar sliding to a three-month low. The culprit is stronger-than-expected output from India, which is flooding the market with supply and pressuring prices on both sides of the Atlantic simultaneously.
And in the soft commodities space, cocoa is also under pressure, extending a two-week decline to reach five-week lows in both New York and London. Rising inventories held in ICE warehouses are doing the work here — when stockpiles build steadily, the market reads it as a supply surplus, and prices respond accordingly.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
