Good morning and welcome to Markets Desk, your opening bell briefing.
Binance is back online after suffering what the exchange is calling its largest crypto hack on record, with withdrawals resuming following a temporary suspension. The breach rattled confidence in centralized crypto infrastructure at a moment when regulatory scrutiny of digital asset platforms remains intense, and the incident is likely to renew calls for tighter custody standards across the industry.
Shifting to deal flow, Marvell Technology and Lumentum have officially announced plans to combine in an all-stock transaction targeting the optical networking space. The deal reflects surging demand for high-bandwidth data transmission infrastructure, driven largely by artificial intelligence workloads. Optical networking has become one of the hotter corners of the semiconductor and components market, and this merger signals consolidation is accelerating.
And on the energy side, Exxon is now generating more profit from refining crude into diesel than from pulling oil out of the ground, a remarkable inversion of the traditional upstream earnings model. Tight crude supply has kept refining margins unusually wide through much of this year, rewarding integrated majors who held onto their downstream operations when others were divesting them.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
