Good afternoon and welcome to Markets Desk, your midday read on what's moving.
The dollar is holding near flat today, caught between two competing forces. Safe-haven demand from a broad equity selloff is giving the greenback a bid, but that support is being trimmed by a modest decline in the ten-year Treasury yield, which softens the rate differential argument for holding dollars. The net result is a currency largely treading water.
Turning to equities, pharmaceuticals are the clear outperformer on the session. The VanEck Pharmaceutical ETF is up roughly two and a half percent, led by AstraZeneca surging more than seven percent and Takeda Pharmaceutical adding more than four percent. Those two names are doing the heavy lifting across the entire sector complex today.
And out of Tokyo, the Bank of Japan is making a significant shift in how it unwinds its massive equity holdings. Starting in January of two thousand twenty seven, the BOJ will more than double its annual sales of stock ETFs, moving from roughly three hundred thirty billion yen to eight hundred sixty billion yen at book value. Officials say safeguards will be in place to cushion any market shock, but make no mistake — this is a meaningful step in normalizing one of the most unconventional balance sheets in central banking history.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
