Welcome to The Light, your quiet-hour reflection.
In Texas, a United Methodist bishop has appointed a new lead pastor to a megachurch that voted to break away from the denomination. The congregation still occupies the disputed property, leaving two claims to one sacred space — a quiet question about where belonging truly lives.
Across the Atlantic, European bishops gathered in Salzburg have issued a plea for peace in Ukraine and beyond. Their words carry a particular weight: true peace, they said, is not an agreement to be negotiated. It begins in the human heart. That is either the oldest wisdom or the most demanding one, perhaps both at once.
And in a moment both ordinary and quietly remarkable, Pope Leo the Fourteenth cast a mail-in ballot in the United States midterm elections, calling participation in democracy both a right and a duty. A man who holds spiritual authority over more than a billion souls, choosing also to be a citizen — there is something worth sitting with in that.
That's this hour's reflection. Carry the light gently.
