Welcome to The Light, your quiet hour of reflection.
There is a man who spent ten years chasing a single image: a plane crossing the face of the moon. What began as a passing thought became a decade of patience, calculation, and wonder. His story asks us what it means to commit so fully to something beautiful and fleeting, something that lasts only a fraction of a second.
And sometimes what we grieve has no name. Derek van Zoonen writes that grief is not reserved for the dead alone. We lose relationships, identities, futures we once held as certain, and when we cannot honour those losses openly, something in us quietly goes missing. We become, as he puts it, strangers to ourselves.
From the interior life to the shared one, a writer in Japan observes that the smell of a pork bun on a Shinkansen train can fracture a carriage into opposing worlds. What olfactory science reveals is quietly humbling: we do not all smell the same thing. Our genes shape our perception, and what feels offensive to one person may be entirely neutral to another. Empathy, it turns out, begins in biology.
That is this hour's reflection. Carry the light gently.
