Good morning and welcome to Markets Desk, your Friday wrap on the stories moving markets right now.
Grain markets are finishing the week under pressure, with wheat and corn both extending losses into Friday trade. Chicago soft red winter contracts shed nearly five cents on Thursday, and corn followed suit, closing down as much as four cents with open interest falling sharply, particularly in the December contract, signaling traders are stepping back from near-term positions as the week closes out.
Bucking that trend, cotton is finding some footing this morning, trading up as much as thirty-six points in early Friday action. That's a reversal after Thursday's late-session slide, which came despite a supportive tape elsewhere — crude oil gaining nearly two and a half dollars a barrel and the dollar index softening by more than half a point. The outside markets are doing cotton a favor today.
Shifting to geopolitics with real market implications, Ukraine's sudden disruption to military-grade Starlink access this week is drawing attention well beyond the battlefield. Soldiers on the ground say the platform is a critical asset for drone operations, and the episode is raising hard questions about single-point dependencies in both defense infrastructure and, by extension, the commercial satellite communications sector.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
