Welcome to The Light, your quiet-hour reflection.
Pope Leo the Fourteenth rested calmly through his first night at Rome's Gemelli Hospital following successful lung surgery. The Holy See reports no complications, with further updates expected through the day. There is something quietly profound in the image of a spiritual leader surrendering to the care of others, held by human hands.
From one kind of wonder to another — Greta Gerwig's vision of Narnia is beginning to take shape, and early impressions suggest something genuinely alive. At an exclusive IMAX preview in New York, the writer and director spoke with Stephen Colbert about her approach to The Magician's Nephew. Those who came in worried, it seems, left with something closer to hope.
And then there is the question of certainty itself. A recent essay in The Marginalian traces our hunger for prediction — from ancient Romans reading the flight of birds to the algorithms we now consult like oracles. We have always wanted to know what comes next, and perhaps that longing tells us more about our fear of the present than any forecast ever could.
That is this hour's reflection. Carry the light gently.
