Good afternoon and welcome to Markets Desk.
Equities closed the week on a firm note, with the S&P five hundred gaining roughly six tenths of a percent and the Dow adding better than eight tenths, as investors leaned into earnings optimism heading into the heart of reporting season. Futures held those gains into the close, suggesting the tape has momentum.
Shifting to credit, the bond market is drawing some pointed scrutiny. Despite an enormous capital draw from AI-linked debt issuance — with revenue models still largely unproven — spreads remain remarkably calm and yield-chasing continues in force. The concern is that sky-high AI equity valuations are backstopping investor confidence in paper that may not deserve it.
Meanwhile in crypto, Tether briefly froze roughly one point four five million in USDT held within THORChain's TRON vaults, halting trading operations for several hours on October ninth. Both Tether and THORChain confirmed the addresses were unfrozen by mid-afternoon UTC, and trading resumed — but the episode was a sharp reminder of how centralized controls can reach into decentralized infrastructure without warning.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
