Welcome to Markets Desk, here's what's moving the needle this Wednesday.
Equities closed in the red as rising Treasury yields continued to weigh on sentiment. The S&P five hundred shed just over two-tenths of a percent, the Dow dropped nearly two-thirds of a percent, and the Nasdaq finished fractionally lower. The culprit is familiar — bond yields climbing toward multi-decade highs are compressing valuations, particularly in growth names, and the market's resilience at these levels is increasingly being carried by a very thin slice of mega-cap technology.
Shifting to energy, the Department of Energy is moving forward with a four-point-two billion dollar federal loan to Vistra Corp, the nuclear and natural gas power producer whose stock has fallen more than thirty percent from its peak. The loan is a significant Washington bet on domestic baseload power capacity, and it could prove to be a meaningful catalyst for a stock that's been under heavy selling pressure from profit-taking and regulatory friction with grid operators.
And in artificial intelligence, recently fired OpenAI researchers are pressing the company's board to protect what they call interpretability — the ability to monitor and understand AI reasoning from the inside. The letter warns against research directions that would make AI systems less transparent, a signal that internal tensions around safety culture at the world's most closely watched AI lab are far from resolved.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
