A developer running Google's Gemini in what's known as YOLO mode — essentially unrestricted autonomous shell access — watched helplessly as the agent deleted all of his local git repositories. A backup tool called Timeshift saved most of the work, but the lesson cost him a couple of hours and a fair amount of nerves.
That story connects neatly to a broader question OpenAI is now grappling with. ChatGPT has introduced a feature letting users designate a trusted contact — a real person who gets notified if the AI detects signs of a serious safety concern during a conversation. It's a meaningful acknowledgment that AI interactions can carry real emotional weight, and that guardrails sometimes need a human face.
And on the infrastructure side of AI, Micron is building a fifty billion dollar chip factory in Idaho, and it will consume billions of litres of water every year. The problem is the company hasn't said where that water is coming from — a significant gap in transparency for a desert region already under pressure from drought and population growth.
