Turning to soft commodities, cocoa futures took a sharp hit Friday, with July ICE New York contracts falling more than five and a half percent. The driver was a surge in ICE warehouse inventories, which triggered long liquidation across the board. When supply signals shift this abruptly, speculative positions unwind fast, and that is precisely what traders saw play out into the close.
Meanwhile, sugar moved in the opposite direction, settling higher on Friday as the Brazilian real gained more than half a percent against the dollar. That currency dynamic matters because Brazil dominates global sugar exports, and a stronger real effectively raises the cost of Brazilian supply for international buyers, lending upward price support to the futures market.
