The geopolitical drumbeat around Greenland is growing louder. President Trump announced plans to establish a large military presence on the island as part of a proposed security arrangement with Denmark, ratcheting up pressure on a deal Greenland insists is not on the table. European capitals are watching closely, and the uncertainty adds another layer of friction to transatlantic relations already under strain.
Turning to the dollar, the greenback gave back early gains Friday after a pair of disappointing data points hit the tape. August manufacturing production came in below expectations, and leading indicators also declined unexpectedly, raising fresh questions about the durability of the expansion. The dollar index finished essentially flat after touching a seven-week high earlier in the session.
And in energy, crude oil fell nearly one and a half percent Friday as diplomatic signals out of the Middle East suggested a possible easing of hostilities that could restore regional export flows. That hope was enough to push West Texas Intermediate lower, though RBOB gasoline managed a modest gain. Natural gas caught a bid late on pre-weekend short covering after earlier weakness tied to cooler weather forecasts trimmed the demand outlook.
