Welcome to Markets Desk, your midday read on the stories moving markets and money.
The Federal Reserve is tightening again, and the ripple effects are already spreading beyond U.S. borders. A stronger dollar and higher borrowing costs squeeze emerging market economies hardest, raising the cost of dollar-denominated debt and forcing foreign central banks into difficult decisions of their own.
Turning to equities, Snowflake is surging to all-time highs, a notable move for a cloud data platform that spent much of the past two years working through a post-pandemic valuation hangover. The rally suggests institutional investors are growing more comfortable with its consumption-based revenue model and see durable demand in enterprise AI workloads.
And on the fraud beat, a federal judge in St. Louis sentenced Siddharth Jawahar to eleven years in prison for running a thirty-five million dollar Ponzi scheme through his firm Swiftarc Capital. The nearly decade-long fraud ensnared multiple investors, including NFL star Travis Kelce. The judge was blunt, saying Jawahar did this out of greed, full stop.
