Welcome to Markets Desk, here's what's moving the tape right now.
Oil is the dominant story across every asset class today. Saudi Arabia has shut its East-West pipeline following attacks, cutting off a key route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz entirely. That move came just as Houthi forces seized Red Sea islands in a rapid offensive, tightening their grip on a second critical shipping artery and sending energy markets into sharp volatility.
Yet crude is now pulling back sharply, and the reason is diplomacy. Foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council are set to meet their Iranian counterpart Monday, reviving hopes of a deal that could reopen Hormuz. That prospect is outweighing the supply disruption fears for now, and traders are unwinding some of Thursday's aggressive six-point-seven percent surge in WTI.
That crude selloff is rippling through soft commodities as well. Sugar prices are tracking oil lower, with New York world sugar off more than three percent on the session. The energy-to-ethanol production link means sugar markets move in sympathy with crude, and today that transmission mechanism is working in full force.
That's the tape. Markets Desk, signing off the floor.
