You're tuned in to Sports Desk, let's get after it.
In St. Louis Friday night, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol got himself thrown out in what might be the most unusual ejection of the season. Rookie reliever Hancel Rincon was making his major league debut when umpires stopped play to tell him to straighten his cap. Marmol had seen enough, stepped in, and got the boot — though his Cardinals still walked away with the win. Quite a debut for Rincon either way.
Shifting to college football, Josh Hoover made one serious first impression for Indiana against North Texas. The TCU transfer, stepping in after Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, went five for five early and powered through a brutal face mask foul that left him bloodied — literally finishing a touchdown drive with a nose pouring red. Indiana rolled, and Hoover looked every bit the part of a quarterback who led the nation in passing two straight years.
And tonight in Dublin, boxing royalty gets her moment. Katie Taylor, Olympic gold medalist and two-weight undisputed champion, steps into Croke Park to fight Flora Pili in what is being called the final chapter of a legendary career. All four major super-lightweight belts on the line, on home soil, in front of her people. This one carries weight beyond the scorecards.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
