You're tuned in to Sports Desk, let's get right to it.
In Cleveland Friday night, Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio did something only five players in major league history had ever done before him. He hit a grand slam and a walk-off home run in the same game, cementing his name in the record books and sending the Cleveland faithful home with something to talk about all weekend long.
That same game carried a sobering moment, though. Tigers rookie Hao-Yu Lee left in the third inning after a brutal collision at home plate with catcher Austin Hedges. Lee was trying to score on a Spencer Torkelson ground ball, Jose Ramirez's throw beat him to the plate, and the two players appeared to bang knees on the play. Lee stayed bent over for several seconds before being helped off the field.
And on the international stage, Caitlin Clark made history in her Team USA debut against China, but when the microphones found her afterward, she wasn't talking about herself. Clark deflected the spotlight directly onto her teammates, pointing to the players who took on the toughest defensive assignments and delivered. That kind of leadership at twenty two years old is something else entirely.
That's your play-by-play. Sports Desk, back to the booth.
